Why does Chrome use so much RAM?
If you've ever opened Task Manager and watched Chrome swallow several gigabytes of memory, you're not imagining it — and it's not entirely a bug. Here's what's actually happening.
Every tab is its own process
For security and stability, Chrome isolates most tabs and extensions into separate operating-system processes (this is called site isolation). It means one crashed or compromised page can't take down the rest — but it also means every open tab carries its own independent memory footprint, whether or not you're looking at it.
Background tabs don't sleep on their own
A tab you opened three hours ago and forgot about is still holding its JavaScript, images, and cached data in memory. Multiply that by the 20, 40, or 80 tabs a lot of people keep open, and you're easily into multiple gigabytes of RAM spent on pages you aren't actively reading.
Modern web pages are heavy
Web apps like Gmail, Google Docs, Figma, Notion, and YouTube each behave more like desktop applications than documents — a single one can hold 200-500 MB. A handful of them open at once is often the real reason your laptop's fan spins up and everything gets sluggish.
What actually fixes it
Closing tabs works, but nobody wants to lose their place. The better answer is suspending idle tabs: the page releases its memory back to your system, but stays in your tab bar as a lightweight placeholder you can restore instantly.
